Feng Shui Your Business

Increasing the Flow of Positive Energy in Your Office

A desktop with a phone and bambo. The Chinese believe that you can direct the flow of energy, called chi, in an environment with the strategic placement of furniture and other objects. This is called feng shui and is a popular topic for many professionals looking to improve the balance and energy in their businesses. Practiced for over 3,000 years, the art of feng shui is believed to improve the harmony, wealth, and tranquility of a space. So if you’ve been thinking of remodeling or rearranging your office, consider the following ideas:

Determine desk placement

Desk placement is the most important choice you will make in the arrangement of your office. You should place it against a wall so that you can see as much of the room as possible, and while the doorway should be within sight, it should diagonal rather than directly in front of it. The Chinese believe that such placement enables professionals to enjoy the most happiness and wealth.

De-clutter and organize

The object of feng shui is to enable positive energy to flow throughout your office. If your desk is overloaded with paperwork, knick knacks, and equipment, you’re blocking the energy from flowing around you. That’s the last thing you want to do. So after determining where your desk will reside you must de-clutter and organize, only allowing one project to reside on your desktop at a time. Also suggested is placing a purple or red object on the southeast corner on your desktop in order to promote wealth. The eastern side of your desk is said to represent health and family; here you might place a plant or picture of your spouse and children.

And don’t jam everything away in your desk drawers. To ensure the most positive chi you must not only de-clutter but also organize. If you haven’t already, establish a filing system that enables you to have a place for everything and everything in its place. You’ll feel better about your business when you know where each element resides.

Accessorize

But a harmonic work environment shouldn’t be sterile and unfriendly. You make it your own by adding personal touches, strengthening the space’s ability to generate positive energy. Two important recommendations include plants and water.

Plants
Plants are said to promote the growth of your business. Not only that, but they invite nature into your office and increase the air quality. And if you decide to bring plants into your office make sure you take good care of them; plants only invite positive energy when they’re flourishing with health. It’s better to have silk plants in your office than real dead ones or none at all. But again, make sure you keep them clean and dusted.

Water
Water represents wealth so when possible it’s good to have a water feature, even a small one, in your office. Whatever you choose, ensure the water flows steady and slow. You can opt to have a fish tank in stead of a water feature, filling it with goldfish — a symbol said to attract more wealth to your business. And if neither of these works for you it’s suggested that you include something representative of water, even if it’s just a picture or sculpture.

Feng shui may sound silly, but it’s been used for thousands of years to promote harmony, prosperity and balance in living environments. As you begin the New Year consider different ways of approaching your business; this may be one way to get out of a rut by attracting more positive energy into your life.
