Stop and Get Directions

My wife loves road trips. Our oldest son goes to school three hours away by car and she loves to make that trip.

We often embark on a road trip without knowing specifically how we’re going to get where we’re going. It’s probably “a guy thing,” but on more than one occasion, we’ve gotten a little turned around. I refuse to say we were lost, but my wife would describe it that way. (It’s a good thing she likes to be trapped in the car alone with me.)

“Why don’t you stop and ask for directions?” she will ask.

“No way!” I respond. “I know where we are.”

My male ego won’t let me admit it out loud, but I don’t always know “exactly” where we are, but we usually find our way.

Starting a tax preparation business will sometimes feel like finding yourself a little turned around and not knowing “exactly” where you are. It’s OK. We’ve all been there. But unlike a roadtrip, letting your ego get in the way of asking for directions could be fatal to the health of your business.

The Most Common Error Made By Startup Entrepreneurs

“Easily the biggest problem is when you have a founder who is sentimentally attached to his company to the point where he won’t let go and accept help,” says Silicon Valley Guru Jonathan Hirshon, founder of Horizon Communications.

For many of you who don’t have a problem with “the guy thing” and can actually ask for directions, sit back and smile. But don’t stop reading yet, there’s still more to come. And for those of you who stuggle with asking for directions like I do, we’re going to introduce some important information that will make a real difference in how successful your tax preparation practice will be.
